I spent the first 15 years of my career working big jobs on big projects in big companies. I specialized in innovation, internal start-ups and turnarounds that lived within the traditional corporate structure of big media companies. In my corporate jobs, it was critical for me to understand all aspects of the digital media business - creative, consumer experience, marketing, technology, financial, and analytical. My ability to synthesize all those elements and communicate clearly and effectively with diverse teams and stakeholders made it possible for me to get. stuff. done. I loved this work. But in 2008, my life changed. One of my children had been recently diagnosed with autism and I found myself in a world of parental advocacy that simply could not be outsourced to a grandparent, a babysitter or a close friend. I set up a consultancy so I could keep doing the kind of work I loved in media and technology, but on a schedule that allowed me to also do the work I needed to do for my family. I called my consultancy Next Door Ventures, based on my belief in the old aphorism that when one door closes another one opens. And that has certainly been true for me, my business and my clients. In the ever-shifting business of digital media and marketing, new doors are opening as quickly as the old ones are closing. I stay on top of what's happening now and what I think is happening next. The strategic insights I provide my clients are also grounded in an understanding of what it takes to actually take an idea to execution and make it a viable business proposition. Ultimately, my strongest skills are making connections and communicating ideas. I am an excellent writer and editor and I have a not-so-secret little sideline helping individuals tell their stories - including online dating profiles, resumes and college essays.
